If you thought the wilderness couldn’t get any darker, Episode 8 – aptly titled “It Chooses” – proves you wrong. This is the episode we’ve been dreading since the pilot episode’s cold open. And thanks to the pristine quality of the release (no compression artifacts ruining those shadowy forest shots), every flinch, every tear, and every horrifying crackle of the fire pit is painfully clear. The moment Travis screams, "That's my brother!" is devastating. The show doesn't let the girls off the hook. Van rationalizes it as survival. Taissa compartmentalizes. But Shauna? Shauna butchers the body with the same cold efficiency she used on the rabbit in her sink. We’ll be hiding under the floorboards until next week

Sophie Thatcher (Teen Natalie) and Sophie Nélisse (Teen Shauna) deliver career-best work here. When Natalie draws the doomed card, the air sucks out of the room. But the twist—Javi claiming the card was his, or rather, the group letting him fall through the ice to save Natalie—is Shakespearean tragedy.
