This was the Vidaxl test of faith. You turned the cam lock nut until you heard a crack. If you didn’t hear a crack, you hadn’t tightened it enough. If you did hear a crack, you had tightened it too much. The correct answer was to tighten it until you felt your ancestors judging you.

Marco sat back. The shelf stood before him: four tiers, one drawer, and a mysterious extra screw that he knew, in his heart, belonged somewhere critical. The whole structure wobbled slightly, like a fawn learning to walk. But it held. Mostly.

Marco spent twenty minutes deciphering this. Did it mean skip shelf two? Did it mean shelf two was actually the top? He eventually realized—with a flash of violent clarity—that the manual had been printed for a completely different product. This was for the Fjordal 5-tier, not the Edelhoff 4-tier.
Marco had already attached Panel A to Panel B backwards. He unscrewed it. Then he attached it upside down. He took a break. If you did hear a crack, you had tightened it too much
Marco nodded bravely. He cleared the dining table, laid out the parts—A, B, C, D, and the mysterious part E that was never mentioned again—and took a deep breath. Then, with trembling fingers, he unfolded the Bauanleitung.
