Kevin snorted. Must be a glitch. He forwarded it to the Veeam rep, Jenna, with a note: “Funny. Resend the real one?”

But the cursor just blinked. Because the backup software wasn’t the point. The price was never the problem.

“You cannot afford to lose it. So why are you bargaining for what it costs to keep it?” Kevin snorted

Over the next six hours, he learned the real price. Not the line item on a renewal contract. Not the 30 grand he’d been trying to save.

His stomach turned to cold cement.

At 10:02, the first ransomware note appeared on the main file share. “Your data is encrypted. You have 48 hours. 12 Bitcoin.” Kevin wasn’t panicked yet. They had backups. Veeam. The whole nine yards. He walked to the server room, pulled up the console.
