Lena Vasquez had spent forty years in the shadows of other people’s spotlights. She’d been the best friend, the quirky aunt, the stern judge who delivers the verdict in the third act. Solid work. Invisible work.

For a moment, silence. Then the sound guy, a grizzled fifty-year-old named Rick who’d worked with everyone from Scorsese to Michael Bay, snorted into his beard. “She’s got a point, kid.”

When the scene ended, the playback monitor was silent. The script supervisor was crying. The boom operator forgot to lower the mic.

Now, at sixty-two, she was standing on a soundstage in downtown Atlanta, holding a cigarette she had no intention of lighting, while a twenty-four-year-old director with a man-bun told her to “feel the hunger of the scene.”

“That’s where it came from. Now are you going to direct, or are you going to get out of my way?”

Reverb premiered at Toronto to a standing ovation. The Times called Lena’s performance “a masterclass in unspoken fury and earned grace.” She got the Independent Spirit Award. At sixty-three, she got her first Oscar nomination.
