Think about fashion, architecture, or movie design. In 1968, 2001: A Space Odyssey showed a white, minimalist future. In 1982, Blade Runner showed a dense, multicultural, rain-slicked future. Now, look at Dune: Part Two (2024). It is beautiful. It is also a revival of 1970s brutalist sci-fi. Fisher would argue that we no longer produce new futures; we only curate old ones. Fisher observed that from the 1990s onward, cultural production entered a loop. Instead of new aesthetics, we got revivals. Instead of new genres, we got reboots, sequels, and "nostalgia modes." A teenager in 2025 listens to music that sounds like 1985, watches a movie franchise from 2002, and plays a video game remastered from 1998. Their cultural present is a haunted house of pasts that were never properly buried.
