Most know her as the “Good Witch of the North.” But her true name— Locasta —and her full title, the Sorceress of the North , reveal a woman navigating the delicate, often violent politics of a land teetering between tyranny and liberation. The greatest injustice to Locasta began not with Baum, but with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. In the 1939 film, producer Mervyn LeRoy and director Victor Fleming conflated two distinct characters from the book: the Good Witch of the North (Locasta) and the Good Witch of the South (Glinda).
